Smooth-coated otters (Lutrogale perspicillata) in Khao Yai National Park. This is the largest otter in Thailand, and like all otters it has a long, thick body, short legs, and webbed feet with sharp claws. The ears are set low on the domed head, but the small, round eyes are set high up and wide apart. The fur is thick and velvety, hence the common name of "smooth coated otter" with two layers; the guard fur keeps the underfur dry underwater to retain body heat. Look for its tell-tale webbed footprints next to Khao Yai's rivers and lakes or heaps of crustacean shells from feeding sessions.
